Today I would like to introduce you to Disney Pixel, a series of cell phone straps that was being sold in Disney Stores near the end of my time in Japan. I bought my two Disney Pixel straps in August 2013 in a Disney Store in Nagoya, the capital of Aichi Prefecture.
If I recall correctly, a different selection of straps was offered in a different colour box each month for the six months that they were sold. But this is pretty clearly a June box and I’m pretty sure I bought it in August, so I guess they weren’t immediately throwing unsold straps into the vault. I also have no idea why one side of the box is labeled “June 1~14” and the other “June 15~25.” So basically I hope you guys weren’t hoping for any actual information from this post.
Similar to Vinylmations, these boxes don’t give you any hint as to which of the month’s twenty-five possible straps – twenty-three of which are shown on the box and two of which are secret – are inside. There’s a pretty interesting range of potential characters here, with the oldest being from a Silly Symphony and the newest from Lilo and Stitch. I only have the vaguest memory of buying the two I bought, but I might have had a selection from a couple different months, and if I did I imagine I picked June because it includes characters from The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules, any of which I would be happy to get.
… One thing I learned in Japan was that I have an embarrassing weakness for surprise items like this. They all have a potential to be awesome that’s too hard for me to resist!
The straps are, as their name implies, designed in a pixelated style. I really like this style, although the long, hooked hands are a bit much. It seems you’re supposed to use those hands (or tails, or hair) to join multiple straps together, but I think they would have been cuter if they were less exaggerated.
In the end, the two straps I got were Hercules and Pinocchio‘s Honest John. Although I’m not a huge fan of any of the characters from Pinocchio, I really love Hercules, so overall I was pretty happy with this result.
